The Last Bullet
When the smoke finally cleared Jackson saw just one
man left standin'
besides himself. It was Big Jim Pollack and he was fishin' for
bullets in his coat,
shirt or anywhere's else, for his gun belt was empty. Jackson
yelled, "Jim, it's over. I have the last bullet!" That's when he saw
it, a glimmer of brass Big Jim had pulled from his vest pocket.
"Don't be a fool! Jackson warned as Jim chambered the round never
once looking up from his pistol. With his gun loaded he raised it
slowly and pulled back the hammer. There they stood at 50 feet
pointing their pistols at one another, one bullet each. An unnatural
show of white teeth displayed a crooked grin across Big Jim's face
for just a moment and then he dropped the gun down to his side, to
one knee, then the other, until he crumbled to ground and blood
began to pool from under his coat. |
